The MLB season is over and congrats to the Boston Red Sox for winning the World Series! We really didn’t care who won since our two teams, the Royals and the Brewers were not playing, but we watched the games, all of them.

I think I’ve mentioned in previous posts that we enjoy sports, but we enjoy baseball in particular. Our son played baseball and our daughter played softball for many years, we’ve had season tickets for the Royals for several years, and our daughter did an internship with the Milwaukee Brewers while in college, but it’s the baseball trips that started when our son was five that hold special family memories for us.

I’m not sure exactly how it started, but my husband decided that he and our son were going to see a baseball game in every major league stadium by the time our son graduated high school. It took a little longer than initially thought – ok, 10 years longer – but they did it! Many times with my father in law joining them, so it was three generations on this mission.

In 1999 they saw the Milwaukee Brewers in the Old County Stadium. They could see Miller Park being built in the background, so of course they went back for another Brewers game in 2001 to visit the new stadium. In August of 2004 they saw the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Cleveland Indians and the Cincinnati Reds. In July of 2005 they saw four games in four cities in four days! They called this leg the ‘Planes, Trains, and Automobiles’ trip because they took all of those modes of transportation, including a subway! During a family trip to Japan in 2005, we all visited the Tokyo Dome to see a Tokyo Giants baseball game, and just this year they finished their last three stadiums: Toronto, Detroit, and Arizona.

Many times I was told that what happened on the baseball trips stayed on the baseball trips, but I did get to hear how special it was to stand on the Dodgers field after the game to watch fireworks, to watch fireworks in our nation’s capital after a game on July 4th, and then flying home that night watching fireworks from the sky. I was also told how a certain stadium was so happy to have visitor that they offered free parking and free programs, and how there was a rain delay in Cleveland, but they were showing the Browns vs. Chiefs game on the big screen to keep everyone entertained, which was a bonus for the boys from KC. All of those memories will come back to life as they look through the photo book I made for them.
